Amy Welborn has written an insightful commentary on Pope Francis' Letter to the United States Bishops who were on retreat at Mundelein Seminary this past week, where she points out the good, the true, or true enough, but...she rightly calls out Papa Francisco for "institutional thinking" when he laments that "[t]he Church’s credibility has been seriously undercut and diminished by these sins and crimes, but even more by the efforts made to deny or conceal them." The reason this is a problem is because the letter is typical Pope Francis, "the letter expresses Francis’ usual themes—listen, dialogue, make space for the new, prioritize unity, don’t impose abstractions:" without stating what the real problem was, or what was the root cause of the this sexual predator abuse problem.
Wellborn goes on, "And so I wonder: Is this situation a problem because it diminished the institution’s credibility and threatens bonds of communion, or because people committed all sorts of sins of commission and omission, used other human beings, did great harm to God’s children, and offended and disobeyed the Lord who created us for good, not evil?"
Clericalism inflamed the problem, the scourge of sexual predator abuse, but it was not the root cause. The root cause of sexual predator abuse is sex, disordered sex, which leads to a culture of predation, and epitomized in the actions and behavior of ex-Cardinal, ‘uncle’ Ted McCarrick. He is the key to understanding, and fixing, this awful problem, this sin of the Church.
Ex-Cardinal, ‘uncle’ Ted McCarrick is the poster boy for this scandal. Do not let the bishops and the pope forget or ignore this.
