Women faced with desperate situations should not be forced into desperate decisions

The Irish people voted May 25 not to preserve the eighth amendment to the Irish Constitution, not to maintain Equal Human Rights for both Mother and unborn Child. And they voted overwhelmingly in favor of this. While I am deeply disappointed in this vote, I am reminded of Saint Mother Teresa’s admonition that God called us to be faithful, not successful. The Irish must still work out the details of their newly man-given right to abort, but we my fellow Christians need to maintain our prayers and our efforts, to be there when women in desperate situations are coerced and encouraged by the World to make a desperate decision. We need to help them see the Choice that the World wants them to miss, to forget and to forsake.

“There are, of course, many other things besides fear that call forth our power to endure. There are other sufferings of body, mind, and soul. The carrying of our cross in union with the cross carried by our Lord will make us grow both in patience and in love. There is also the delicate quality of being patient with ourselves, but without pampering or excusing ourselves. We accept our limitations, and our ability to make mistakes; we are patient under our mistakes. And finally, we must learn to be patient with God. Here above all, we see that patience is humility in action. There are many things we will have to settle between ourselves and him all during our lives. He has told us: ‘My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor your ways my ways.’ (Isaiah 55:8) But it is these ways of God, irrevocable, often unpredictable, time-consuming, even seemingly contradictory to our best interests, which are the only way to love and peace.”
