Stacy Trasancos: Catholic doctrine that women cannot be ordained to the ministerial priesthood is not supported by "hard logic" and may change in the future?

Stacy wrote: "However, the meaning of some things he said such as, “The Kingdom of God is at hand,” for example, is not as clear in a literal sense.

We know that by the end of the first century the Roman Catholic Church was established and there can be little doubt that the cultural influences of that time and place affected the doctrine."
She goes on to quote Fr. Bonsor that "There isn’t any hard logic to support the idea that the concrete forms of the ecclesiastical offices cannot be changed."
She's shedding light on how Catholics come to orthodox understandings, which is not the same as saying women can be ministerial priests. I do not think you should selectively quote Stacy, especially when you leave out that she wrote in the same post, "What I will say is that the attitude pushing for change [on women in the ministerial priesthood] is wrong, based on what I’ve read.

I think perhaps the word "developed" would be better than "evolved", but I understand Stacy to be saying developed, and doctrine does not change, but it does develop, else we would not have had Pius IX declare the dogma of the Immaculate Conception

"For these reasons, maybe the question of women in the priesthood will remain unsettled. There isn't any hard logic to support the idea that the concrete forms of the ecclesiastical offices cannot be changed....Whether women should or will someday be priests, isn't for this single writer to say."

In light of the Vatican's infallible ban, this passage from Tracy is just plain troubling. Development of doctrine can never mean jettisoning what the Church previously taught. What does she mean by "whether women should or will someday be priests.."? The matter has been resolved.

While Stacy does write, "the attitude pushing for change is ..", she nevertheless suggests that the teaching could evolve. And THAT is what is disturbing.

So we have an apparent situation where comments made by the same author would appear to be contradictory -
1."Whether women should or will someday be priests, isn't for this single writer to say."
2."What I will say is that the attitude pushing for change [on women in the ministerial priesthood] is wrong, based on what I’ve read."

If we consider that Stacy believes it is for the Magisterium to have the say on priestesses, that would reconcile the statement that it is not for her to say, with her statement that it is wrong to push for priestesses

Michael Cole said...

Problem is, Stacy also writes, "For these reasons, maybe the question of women in the priesthood will remain unsettled."

The matter has been settled. Definitively. In Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, No. 4.

To suggest that the teaching could not change is highly disrespectful of the Pontiff's teaching office and does not constitute that obedience called for by the Vicar of Christ who says clearly that the teaching is to be firmly held and accepted by all the Church's faithful.

Stacy also writes of priestess wanting Dr. Malone, "it’s the attitude about change that is the red flag of something being awry." Granted it may be nuanced, but based on my experience reading Stacy I do not find a pattern of dissent, or a clear calling to change a doctrine. She's faithful, and writes some very good columns. A vast improvement at the CFP, I enjoy reading her and Weigle, right on the same page.

I don't share your enthusiasm for the CFP. Or Trasancos. I do enjoy Weigle. But that alone isn't worth the price of the CFP for me. The publication has its problems. Which is why many parishes purchase a large number of copies to promote it. But the paper continues to do poorly.
