Culture Front: I heard about a musician name Sufjan (Soof-yan) Stevens, from Michigan, who could be described as Indie Rock. My son was going to a concert of his in Providence. So I’d like to recommend you give a listen, I’ll explain why below. The first song you should listen, it was kind of a semi-hit so some of you may have heard it, is called “Chicago” listen to it here
Next give a listen to “Sister Winter” listen to it here
then “Casimir Pulaski day” which concerns themes of doubt (try to follow the Casimir Pulaski attempted regicide thread) when a young girl suffers from bone cancer, listen to it here
or here and possibly “For the Widows in Paradise” which might be about his hippie mother, listen here

The guy sings with an understated yet strong voice, and I think he has great, possibly intricate (I’m no expert) harmonies. But the reason I recommend that you listen is this guy did a cover version of “Holy, Holy, Holy” which strikes me as unbelievable. Listen to that here:

As far as I know the guy is Christian, but was raised in some type of Inter-Faith religion as a child, and was given this Persian First name by a cleric in this religion. I heard his parents were hippies, which might explain things. Later Sufjan professed Christianity. I cannot vouch for his beliefs, whether he’s Evangelical, Syncratic or even Agnostic, but considering that Jesus said “There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward” (Mk9:39) I think you have to give a listen to this guy just for the sake that he recorded the song “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Let me know what you think.

Feb 1 Fri 8pm 1st Friday Mass & adoration

Battle Ready is the term Doug Barry, of EWTN's Life on the Rock, is using to motivate Catholic men to stand up for their Faith. Everyday is Training Day: BODY! Never underestimate the importance of finding something everyday about yourself to be better trained in. Remember that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 6:19-20 - "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body." What have you been doing to "glorify God in your body"? What have you been doing to maintain the temple? In other words, are you caring for the gift of your body that God gave you? No need to be a world class athlete, but reasonable exercise, healthy eating and good hygiene should be standard operating procedure for any soldier of Christ. Cut out any destructive habits like smoking, excessive drinking, a lousy diet, etc.

We also glorify God in our bodies by striving to live pure lives and not indulging in disordered pleasures. The temptation to glorify ourselves with disordered or impure pleasures in this world is strong. But God never allows us to be tempted beyond what we can handle.

And check the language coming from the mouth. We should do all we can to keep our language noble and pleasing to God. This is another way we can glorify God in the body.

James 3:2 - "For we all stumble in many respects. If anyone does not stumble in speech, he is a perfect man, able to bridle his whole body also."

PRAYER IS NECESSARY in order for real progress to be made in any of the above. We all have been given the gift of free will. We can choose to make excuses and not do what we know we should, or we can choose to pray, train hard and be BATTLE READY!

Why BATTLE READY BECAUSE Everyday is training day to form us into better warriors for the service of God and others.
