Apologies excepted
The recent death of Mrs. Ruth Graham, the beloved wife of preacher Billy Graham, has caused renewed reflection on her oft quoted comment: "If God does not judge America soon, he'll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah."
I have nothing but respect for Billy and Ruth Graham. That said, her quote: "If God does not judge America soon, he'll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah," is really an attempt to place a timeline on Jesus' judgment of this country.
In Matthew 10:14-15, Jesus tells His Apostles, "Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town."
Jesus indicates that those individuals and areas which reject His Good News as passed on by His Apostles will fare worse than Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment. Therefore, we cannot necessarily expect Jesus to judge America sooner than that. However, He just might. But He is not bound to do so in our time but rather in His.
