PEARLS OF PADRE PIO (#2), taken from "Counsels, Exhortations: Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Italy" : "That which comes from Satan begins with calmness and ends in storm, indifference and apathy" (p.15).

SERIES ON FAITH (#18) More from WORSHIPPING A HIDDEN GOD: Unlocking the Secrets of the Interior Life by Archbishop Luis M. Martinez (Sophia Institute Press: Manchester, New Hampshire: 2003, 2014):

"This is what we must do during prayer when we suffer desolation: keep our eyes fixed on the road. If, at some time, we have enjoyed sweet, tranquil prayer, let us strive to recapture it; let us do without joy and pleasure what we do with joy and pleasure on days of consolation. Whoever has experienced such prayer will know how to make his prayer when he is desolate -- not, of course, with sweetness, but with the same care and ingenuousness. If any feeling enters into that simple gaze upon God, it seems to me that it should be an utter self-abnegation in the presence of God and an abandonment to Him: 'I am nothing, but I place myself at Your disposition. Here I am' " (p. 207).
