Dr. Mildred Jefferson April 6, 1926-Oct. 15, 2010 RIP

"I became a physician in order to help save lives. I am at once a physician, a citizen, and a woman, and I am not willing to stand aside and allow the concept of expendable human lives to turn this great land of ours into just another exclusive reservation where only the perfect, the privileged, and the planned have the right to live. " - Dr. Mildred Jefferson

First African-American woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School
First female surgical intern at Boston City Hospital
First woman admitted to membership in the Boston Surgical Society

"The right-to-life cause is not the concern of only a special few but it should be the cause of all those who care about fairness and justice, love and compassion and liberty with law."

Dr. Jefferson is the person credited with bringing Ronald Reagan around to the Pro-Life view.
Dr. Jefferson spoke so passionately about the matter, she even changed President Ronald Reagan’s views when he was governor of California, according to Massachusetts Citizens for Life president Anne Fox.
“Before Roe v. Wade, Dr. Jefferson was on “The Advocates,” a program on the educational channel in Boston,” Ms. Fox said. “It was a high-quality debate on abortion. Gov. Reagan was so impressed by what she had to say, that he contacted her, and he completed changed his position.”

They hear what they want to hear

The news media is like a wayward teenager, they hear what they want to hear whenever the Pope speaks. The controversy of late can be summarized in the words of the Catholic Culture Editorial.
Secular journalists have routinely interpreted the Pope’s statement as an admission that condom use can be justified, although the Pope’s full statement, in context, clearly makes no such claim.
Condom use cannot be "justified" nor has "The Vatican appeared to open the door Tuesday to a broader discussion about the acceptable uses of condoms," because the Pope said

There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality.
Adding that the Church can never regard condom use as “a real or moral solution.”

Though the media distorts, and the bunglers at L’Osservatore Romano promote rash judgment, some things will always remain the same.

Update:Catholic Free Press runs CNS article Pope's remarks open new chapter in condom debate on 11/26/2010, p.3, which makes the preposterous claim that the Italian translation of the Pope's book said that condom use by a prostitute was "justified". Even the Thavis article is confusing, as Thavis quotes Pope Benedict that the Church “of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution [for prostitutes to use condoms], but in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality.” So we have the Pope saying in a specific situation that one immoral act might indicate a "first step" towards an understanding of what constitutes moral action, and an alleged reporter claiming the Italian translation does not indicate this as a first step but as "justified".

The Body Doesn't Lie But Modern Culture does.
By: Msgr. Charles Pope
One of the great errors of our day is the implicit rejection of the truth that our bodies have something to tell us about who we are and what we are called to do and be. Most moderns see the body merely as a tool of sorts...

Construction in the Womb - Too Perfect!

The Pope has NOT condoned condom use

Boycott Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)

Despite the good news at the USCCB, I'm urging Catholics to donate their treasure (and time) to worthwhile Charities instead of the the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, CCHD, until troublesome groups have been removed from the grant list and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has provided better oversight.

CCHD were caught giving money to Planned Parenthood about 12 years ago, and were supposedly reformed after that disgraceful event, yet have been found to donate to groups that publicly support abortion and same-sex marriage in contradiction to Catholic Church teaching.

This year I understand the USCCB group running CCHD will not release the names of grantees until after the collection. Not only does this group fund those who contradict Church teaching publicly, they violate the Church Concept of Subsidiarity.

Other Problems are documented here, while complete List of "troublesome" group funding has been compiled here

Michael Voris produced a news article on CCHD and the Boycott.

Note: Fr. Richard John Neuhaus wrote before his death, "Some bishops no longer allow the [C]CHD collection in their dioceses, and more should not allow it. In fact, [C]CHD, misbegotten in concept and corrupt in practice, should, at long last, be terminated."

Green Bay has joined a growing list of Dioceses not donating this year. While Reform may still be possible, this is a wait and see reform that still indactes prudence means withholding donations for now.
