catholic (with a small 'c') capitualtion

Aug 31 Sat am prayers on the sidewalk but no Mass – 5th Saturday
Problem Pregnancy Chapel, 495 Pleasant St. Worcester.

Political Catholics you should know and pray for: Joseph (Jody) Bottum, alleged Conservative Catholic man of letters, fired as Editor of First Things Magazine 3 years ago, wrote a long and vapid surrender concerning Catholic teaching that marriage is the life-long union of one man and one woman. This article appeared in Commonweal Magazine, apparently as part of a coordinated Public Relations campaign with the NYT and the publication of Bottum's new book, and funded by the Liberal Luce Foundation - or as Robert Royal said "A cynic might think that this shows less an argument about Church policy than a PR campaign, as in 'former First Things editor turns.'"

Essentially Bottum does not provide reasoned argument, opining only that we Catholics must surrender and accept same-sex marriage as Americans. Mark Shea explains "This, being translated, means 'We have no king but Caesar.'"

Frank Weathers of Patheos reacted to Bottum's tiresome essay in these words: "So we should bag the idea of defending what the Church holds as true, both because it is philosophically true, and morally true, and knuckle under to the pressure of the animal spirits of the zeitgeist, and just throw in the towel? All because we are afraid of the potential white martyrdom of being called bigots?"

Matthew Franck at First Things called Bottum's essay "Weary and Wearisome", writing "But what I detect in it is the work of someone who was never all that interested in investigating the arguments on either side of the same-sex marriage debate; whose scant interest in it has now been fully exhausted, both intellectually and morally; and whose present conclusions hover in mid-air without anything to support them other than a wistful regret that he has lost a hoedown partner in a gay man who has come fairly unglued over the issue."

Unfortunately I believe there will be more of this, but please continue to pray for these poor confused and worldly Catholics, please stay faithful to our Lord Jesus
