Mar 29 Good Friday noon - Good Friday "Way of the Cross" at Planned Parenthood, 470 Pleasant St. in Worcester, for Victims of Abortion. Through His Holy Passion, Our Lord united Himself with all the victims of suffering in this life. None suffer more innocently than children in the womb whose lives are taken by abortion. None suffer more deeply than their mothers, who carry such a burden of guilt and shame.
On Good Friday we remember all the victims of abortion - the children lost, the mothers wounded, the communities blighted - in a solemn, ecumenical prayer service:

Good Movie: ‘We are Marshal’ “It would be a shame if genre fatigue prevents We Are Marshall from being recognized as what it is, one of the better sports films in recent years. More than most films of its ilk, We Are Marshall rises above the clichés that define the genre, connecting sport to larger issues in an emotionally satisfying way.” - Steven Greydanus

No Tours/No Golf

The so-called anti-discrimination ‘Bathroom Bill’ currently being debated in the Massachusetts Legislature allows boys or men who ‘feel’ they are a girl or woman to use women’s public locker rooms and bathrooms. Some legislators attempt to argue that this law will not affect public schools, but it will: Recently a group of State legislators met with Department of Education Commissioner Mitchel Chester. The Legislators attempted to explain that the legislative intent of the Transgender law excluded bathrooms and locker rooms from the changes to non- discrimination laws. Commissioner Chester rejected the explanation and has refused to withdraw the 11-page Guidance Document which includes bathrooms and locker rooms and discipline for students who complain. This Guidance document has received considerable local and national press including an Op-ed in the Wall Street Journal that was written by James Ehrhard who serves on the Tantasqua Regional School Committee in Sturbridge.

The nine-member legislative group called for the meeting because the Guidance document directs boys who think they are girls to use the girls’ bathroom and girls’ locker room. The Legislators contend that the law explicitly removed provisions that would allow this and that the Commissioner has gone beyond his legal authority. The Commissioner listened, but refuses to withdraw the Guidance.

Good Movie: ‘The Guys’ “is a small, intimate meditation on grief and loss in the days after September 11, 2001. Set less than two weeks after that fateful day, it relates an encounter between a New York fire captain named Nick and a writer named Joan, who meet to discuss the eulogies Nick has been called on to deliver for a number of his fallen brothers…[it]…is not an entertainment, or even a story, but a simple, direct portrait of grief amid overwhelming circumstances.” - Steven Greydanus

“…modern catechesis to a large extent hardly mentions the concept of ‘eternal life’, and the problem of death is only touched upon, and then for the most part only in the context of how to delay its approach or mitigate its attendant conditions. Since many Christians have lost their sense for the ‘last things’, death is surrounded by silence, fear or the attempt to trivialize it. For centuries the Church has taught us to pray that death will not overtake us unawares, that we shall be given time to prepare for it; now, a sudden death is regarded as a blessing. If we do not accept and respect death, we do not accept and respect life either. “ Ratzinger Report, p.145

Good Movie: ‘I am David’, set in 1952 and based on the Danish fiction book written by Anne Holm in 1963. It tells the story of a young boy who, with the help of a prison guard, escapes from a Bulgarian Communist camp, and journeys to Denmark. It may seem hard for 12 year olds to read a book about escape from a concentration camp, but this is a very good story anyone 12 or older. Movie critic Stephen Greydanus writes “As the title suggests, I Am David wants us to experience David’s story through the eyes of a young boy who has never known anything but this camp…

He knows that one day he was taken aside and quietly told how to escape — to climb the electrified fence in the 30 seconds it would be shut down, and that beyond the fence he would find a stash of provisions for the journey to a ship that would take him to Italy, from which he should try to make his way to Denmark.

How the stash of provisions was planted beyond the fence, and why he should make his way to Denmark, David doesn’t know, and neither do we. His mind is a jumble of confused memories, and we piece his past together along with him. Writer-director Paul Feig (TV’s "Freaks and Geeks"), adapting the celebrated 1963 novel North to Freedom by Danish writer Anne Holm, shrewdly structures David’s journey as a puzzle, slowly reconstructing David’s past as he moves toward his future.
